SDG 6 Country Acceleration Case Study Bhutan 2025
22 July 2025
Fifteen years ago in Bhutan, three-quarters of the population did not have access to safe drinking water. Today, that situation has reversed, with three in four people now having access to safe drinking water. Since 2010, the country has advanced at a pace ten times faster than during the 2000s. How has this been possible? This case study explores the main drivers behind Bhutan’s rapid acceleration, starting from leadership at the national level to the dedicated efforts of water caretakers in rural communities. At the same time, Bhutan still faces many challenges, principally to reach the remaining quarter of the population and sustain the achievements made so far in the long run.
